Difference between Respiration, Breathing and Gaseous Exchange

Breathing is inhalation and exhalation of air for the intake of oxygen and giving out of carbon dioxide. In higher animals lungs are the organs of breathing. In breathing fresh air is made available to the respiratory surface of lung for gaseous exchange. As fresh air has a higher concentration of oxygen than it is present in the blood, therefore it diffuses into the blood. At the same the concentration of carbon dioxide is in higher in concentration in the blood, so it is diffused into the lungs and is expelled out by the process of breathing.

Respiration is energy releasing process at cellular level whereby food is broken for release of energy. In this process complex organic substances like glucose, are broken down into simpler compounds like carbon dioxide and water with the release of energy.

The term gaseous exchange is used to describe the diffusion of gases from an area higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. This term is used for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between an organism and its environment. In plants exchange takes place during photosynthesis and respiration. In animals, gases are exchanged during respiration.
